Targeted Cryotherapy

localized cryotherapy machineThis 2-minute Targeted Cryotherapy treatment helps relieve joint and muscle soreness and inflammation with safe localized cooling technology.

No appointment is necessary and drop-ins are welcome!

Treatments are applied over three or four visits as the body continues healing. The effects continue after the treatment itself ends, as the diagram below shows. An added bonus — it’s far more convenient than applying ice off and on for days.

  • Treats a specific muscle or joint that’s painful — not the whole body
  • Reduces inflammation
  • Flushes fluid and cellular waste from painful or injured tissue
  • Increases range of motion and regenerative circulation
  • Soothes muscles and skin

This technology cools the affected area to just above freezing, a safe temperature range that maximizes pain relief without endangering tissue.

And unlike full-body cryotherapy that requires you to undress and immerses your entire body below the neck, targeted cryotherapy is safe. Unlike full-body treatment, it doesn’t expose you to dangerously low temperatures — 200 degrees below zero! — in an enclosed environment that can starve the body of essential oxygen.

Targeted cryotherapy helps reduce pain and inflammation from sports injuries, back, neck and shoulder pain, sprains, strains and other soft tissue problem. Even people with chronic inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis say they feel better after targeted cryotherapy.

How does Targeted Cryotherapy work?

Your pain relief specialist will use a handheld device (pictured above) that lowers the body temperature around a targeted muscle or joint to a therapeutic level. The treatment itself takes about 2 minutes. Unlike whole-body immersion cryotherapy, you can keep your street clothes on. There is no need to change.

Targeted cryotherapy provides immediate relief and reduces inflammation by rapidly cooling areas that are painful or swollen. This releases endorphins and reduces inflammation which reduces pain.

It also accelerates healing and recovery by encouraging the body to circulate blood more rapidly into the cooled area. This speeds the removal of by-products of tissue damage while supplying fresh nutrients to the recovering tissue.

Here’s a diagram of how cryotherapy’s beneficial effects continue after the treatment itself is complete:

How do I know if Targeted Cryotherapy is right for me?

Targeted or localized cryotherapy often helps:

  • Sports and fitness-related pain or short-term pain related to overuse of a specific muscle or joint
  • Chronic back, neck, shoulder, hip and knee pain
  • Chronic pain related to systemic health issues like rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and fibromyalgia.

If you’re not sure, just call and talk to one of our pain relief specialists, for free. We won’t recommend localized cryotherapy if we don’t think it will help.

Pain can be complex. Sometimes another therapy, or several therapies combined, would be likelier to help your specific symptoms.

Since we offer the complete array of non-invasive, non-surgical drug-free pain relief therapies, we have no incentive to recommend cryo if we don’t think it’s the best answer for you.

Our focus is providing pain relief — not selling cryotherapy.

Differences between Targeted and Whole-body Cryotherapy (Cryosauna)

Unlike whole-body cryotherapy, also called “cryosauna,” targeted or localized cryotherapy does NOT use hazardous materials like dangerously cold nitrogen gas.

Targeted cryotherapy never exposes your body to substances that are hundreds of degrees below zero.

Whole-body cryotherapy or cryosauna is more expensive and less convenient than localized cryotherapy. The equipment requires a dedicated location, whereas our targeted cryotherapy technology is portable and suitable for a variety of situations, from marathons to employee wellness events and health fairs.

What’s Targeted Cryotherapy like? Does it hurt?

Patients generally say they enjoy the experience. Sore muscles or joints feel the benefits of cold therapy, and they also say it’s a refreshing experience overall.

If you’d like to see how it feels before you decide on treatment, just let your pain relief specialist know, and he or she will arrange it.
