Meditation and Mindfulness Practice Comes to Canfield Avenue School

(Randolph, NJ, October 1, 2015) Twenty-four teachers at Canfield Avenue School in Mine Hill, NJ have signed on to do something that’s very unusual in a classroom setting. As part of a program called Project Quiet Time, they have all agreed that they will take the time for their students and for themselves to relax. And breathe. And meditate.

Meditation Program Brings Much-Needed Serenity to School

meditation classThe program, originally implemented at Ironia School in Randolph, is being brought to Canfield Avenue School with the help of Lara Beneshan and the Randolph Pain Relief and Wellness Center. Beneshan, a meditation teacher and Licensed Acupuncturist has been meditating for most of her life as a means of bringing relief to chronic migraines.

“Meditation allows us to breathe deeply which oxygenates the blood hence bringing more oxygen to the brain,” said Beneshan. She told the teachers, “you might want to consider a 90 second meditation prior to standardized testing.”

Lee Nittel, former Ironia principal and current Mine Hill Superintendent embraced the program at Ironia and immediately shared the concept with the Canfield Avenue Staff. “This was a voluntary meeting and two thirds of the staff turned out,” said Nittel. “There’s clearly not only an interest but also a need to bring mindfulness to these kids who just go go go from morning until night.”

The Randolph Pain Relief and Wellness Center is no stranger to bringing meditation and mindfulness to the community at large. They host a free workshop each month, and offer a premium series of classes twice a year. For more information, check the events page on the website.

“Mindfulness has become a huge part of overall health and wellbeing”, said David Simon, co-owner of the Randolph Pain Relief and Wellness Center and originator of the “Project Quiet Time” concept. “These techniques can bring huge benefit to one’s overall wellness.”
