Education and credentials
Medical doctors specializing in chronic pain management complete an array of advanced and highly specialized study and training across multiple medical disciplines, including:
- A four-year undergraduate pre-med or health sciences degree
- Four years of medical school
- Three to seven years of residency training in a particular specialty like surgery or internal medicine
- One to three years of fellowship training in the sub-specialties of pain management and/or anesthesiology
- Extensive hands-on and clinical training in the treatment of chronic pain associated with trauma, injury and illness
- Board certification in their primary specialty and in pain management and/or anesthesiology
They must also be licensed by the state in which they practice and complete significant annual continuing professional education requirements.
